Galvanized: The Odyssey of a Reluctant Carolina Confederate (2020)

Wright Stephen Batchelor was a farmer who never owned slaves and simply wanted to work his land and raise a family before war upended the nation. He wore the uniform of two different armies in the Civil War, spent time in a horrific POW camp, walked halfway across the country just in time for the last weeks of the war, and then walked home to North Carolina from Appomattox.
Batchelor was a survivor, against overwhelming odds. Like most North Carolinians, he was opposed to both secession and war, but was directed into the conflict by many pressures. After the war, he became a supporter of rights for freed slaves, attempted local politics, and was involved in a bizarre murder.
Galvanized:The Odyssey of a Reluctant Carolina Confederate offers a history of the Company A “ Chicora Guards” of the 47th North Carolina Regiment, as well as North Carolina. It is also about discovering an unknown relative with a controversial past. It challenges challenge readers to examine the conflict from an angle not often presented, from the view of the people, not the more commonly studied leaders, a story not often told in Civil War literature and about how it is still being fought.
Galvanized is being published by the University of Nebraska Press/Potomac Books.
