I’ve been focused on nonfiction for the last several years — some would argue 45 — but I have a new piece of fiction up at The Broadkill Review, a fine literary online literary journal.
There is kind of a catch, of course. This short story is based on a true story that I wrote about for a nonfiction assignment at East Carolina University back in 2012. But, I guess a lot of fiction comes about that way, right?
I do have more fiction as WIP [Works-In-Progress], including a longform project, but I hope you’ll enjoy this story set in eastern North Carolina during World War II. It’s called “I Didn’t Care About None of That,” and you can read it for free by clicking here.
Let me know what you think.
Well done! Look forward to more…
thank you for reading and for the kind words!
I don’t know what else to say, other than wow. Deeply touching stuff Mike.

Beautiful story, Michael. You are an artist!
thanks Michael, that means a lot coming from you.
I enjoyed your short story. It was a wonderful and moving story of love of family. Thank you for sharing!

Michael, as always, I love reading your works. This was especially beautiful and beautifully written! It made me cry. I love that I can recognize names and places in the story. I too grew up around tobacco farming and as a youngster, would help hand, loop, and grade (after I got older).
Excellent read. Gimme more!!! God bless!
Thank you for reading, and so much more for the kind words. There is no greater compliment for a writer than what you’ve said There is much more to come!
