When I was 15, I got the chance to cover high school sports for my hometown newspaper – and they were going to pay me. After shoveling hog manure on the family farm, this was a serious career move for me. It was a great job, and I had wonderful editors – as a matter of fact, my high school years at the paper were like the beginning of college. I thank those two guys for all they taught me.
I eventually came back and worked as editor of that newspaper, and have done a lot of freelancing since then. Now, in the “internet age,” I’m going to do a little piece here and there on some sports websites, mostly for fun, mostly to try to sharpen my writing.
